Portrait of a Mottisfont Rose - Original Painting
The British Horticulture Series Collection: “Portrait of a Mottisfont Rose"
“Portrait of a Mottisfont Rose" depicts a portrait of a single pale pink rose from the walled rose garden of England’s National Trust site Mottisfont.
Mottisfont Rose Garden was the first garden that I visited on a trip to England in 2018. I had been pouring over magazines and books of British gardens for at least a year prior to the trip, obsessing over the horticultural marvels that existed in the UK. I remember being able to smell the roses from outside the gardens walls. It was intoxicating. Upon entering the actual garden it was everything I had dreamed of and more. The morning light was exquisite and the roses were exploding across the garden.
What drew me to paint this rose was its elegance and delicate colour. Soft, almost white, pink flowers are my favourites in any garden. I also enjoyed the dichotomy between the in focus rose in the foreground and all of the dynamic blurred stems and leaves of the rose bush in the background. It creates a simple yet energetic composition that celebrates an English rose.
I hope that the candor of this piece inspires you to collect this graceful watercolour painting of a rose.
