"Madeline" - Print
“Madeline” invites you into Calgary’s Gerry Shaw Memorial Garden that is reminiscent of Ludwig Bemelmans’ Madeline (1939), “In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. They left the house at half-past-nine in two straight lines, in rain or shine. The smallest one was Madeline.”
This series if comprised of paintings that marry a love of literature with Calgary’s extraordinary scenery and parks, with different ecosystems and microclimates, that have a story-like atmosphere that inspire the imagination. It carries a sense of wonder and poignancy which are evocative of scenes, prose, and settings found in well-known novels and plays to me.
“Calgary Parks” is about being a child again and seeing Calgary through the lens of a literary work or as a setting for a novel.
I hope that this park captures the spirit of Bemelmans’ Paris and entices you to add it to your collection.
