“Général Schablikine” Rose in the Sunshine
“Sunny “Général Schablikine” Tea Rose” depicts a central rose freshly unfurled and radiant that is catching the morning light on its layers of multi-toned petals. The rose is a ‘Général Schablikine’ rose from the walled Rose Garden at Mottisfont, a National Trust site.
Mottisfont Rose Garden was the first garden that I visited on a trip to England in 2018. I had been pouring over magazines and books of British gardens for at least a year prior to the trip, obsessing over the horticultural marvels that existed in the UK. I remember being able to smell the roses from outside the gardens walls. It was intoxicating. Upon entering the actual garden it was everything I had dreamed of and more. The morning light was exquisite and the roses were exploding across the garden.
This ‘Général Schablikine’ rose, which was first introduced in 1878, caught my eye because of the radiant light catching the roses petals and its perfect shape, a specimen of its kind. Upon closer inspection I loved the deeper pink outer petals surrounding the ruffled bloom.
I hope that the radiance of this piece entices you to collect this candy-like rose watercolour.

This piece makes a wonderful diptych when paired with my “'White Pet’ Rose in the Morning Light” painting, which I worked on simultaneously with “Sunny “Général Schablikine” Tea Rose”. Together they sing and balance each other.
